  • What is a PEDAL DRIVE?
When we are discussing pedals, think about riding a bike and how you utilize your feet and legs in order to move forward. Kayaking is quite similar. Hobie's MirageDrive pedal system is a unique technology that sets their kayaks apart from traditional paddle kayaks. The MirageDrive system uses two underwater fins that move back and forth, mimicking the motion of a penguin's flippers. This motion propels the kayak forward, allowing the user to move efficiently and hands-free through the water. To use the MirageDrive system, the user sits in the kayak with their feet on the pedals and simply pushes one foot forward and the other foot back in a pedaling motion. The fins beneath the kayak move in response to the pedaling motion, propelling the kayak forward with ease. This allows the user to conserve their upper body strength and use their legs instead, making it a more comfortable and efficient way to kayak. These turn our kayaks into the Cadillacs of the sea.
  • Do I need to BE ABLE TO SWIM?
Yes. While kayaking, it's important to ensure that you have basic swimming skills and feel comfortable in the water. While you don't need to be a great swimmer, you should be able to swim back to your kayak with the assistance of a life preserver (PFD) if necessary. The PFD will provide buoyancy and help keep you afloat in case of an emergency. It's also essential to wear the PFD at all times while kayaking, as it can be difficult to put on in the water during an emergency situation.
  • Are there any AGE RESTRICTIONS?
The safety requirements for kayaking are crucial for the wellbeing of all participants, and it's important to follow them strictly. To ensure the safety of all involved, our age limit for kayaking is seven years and up, with the added requirement that all participants weigh at least 30 lbs and can properly wear a life jacket rated for 30-50 lbs. Additionally, all participants, regardless of age, should have basic swimming abilities. (See the question above). For children 12 years of age and younger, wearing a US Coast Guard approved life jacket is legally required at all times while in the kayak. These jackets provide the necessary buoyancy to keep children afloat and increase their chances of survival in case of an accident. These requirements are in place for everyone's safety and cannot be waived under any circumstances. It's important to take them seriously and adhere to them strictly to ensure a safe and enjoyable kayaking experience. To further ensure the safety of all participants, we have additional requirements for minors who want to go kayaking. Participants under 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult at all times. For those under 12 years old, they must ride in a double kayak with an adult who is 18 years old or older. This is to ensure that they have proper supervision and assistance if needed during the kayaking activity. Kayaking can be a fun and exciting activity for people of all ages, but safety is always a top priority. These requirements are in place to ensure that minors are not put at risk and can have an enjoyable experience while being supervised by a responsible adult. We appreciate your cooperation in following these guidelines to ensure everyone's safety.
  • Are there any HEALTH CONCERNS to consider?
While pedal drive kayaking can be a fun and exciting activity, there are certain health concerns that should be considered before participating. One of the primary concerns is the strain on the lower body, particularly the legs and knees, which are used extensively during pedaling. Individuals with pre-existing knee or leg injuries may experience discomfort or exacerbation of their condition during pedaling, and should consult with their doctor before attempting this activity. Additionally, prolonged sitting in a kayak can cause discomfort and stiffness in the back and hips, particularly for those with pre-existing back or hip issues. It's important to take breaks and stretch regularly to avoid discomfort and to prevent injury. Lastly, exposure to the sun and heat can also be a concern during pedal drive kayaking. Proper hydration, sun protection, and wearing appropriate clothing are essential to prevent dehydration, sunburn, and heat-related illnesses. It's always important to listen to your body and take breaks when needed. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions, it's recommended to consult with your doctor before attempting any new physical activity, including pedal drive kayaking. By being aware of the potential health concerns and taking necessary precautions, you can still enjoy this fun activity while ensuring your safety and wellbeing.
